Long before Social Security and Medicare, a group of enterprising citizens put together a plan to care for the elderly, as the Hebrew Old Age Home of Atlantic City. Over the years, their vision evolved into world-class long-term care and assisted living facilities that were truly homes for the residents. They were so successful that long-term care administrators visited from as far away as Japan to study the design and try to duplicate it.
For over a decade, the Seashore Gardens Foundation worked alongside the home to provide the supplemental programs that truly enriched elder lives. Now as a separate foundation, we remain steadfast to our mission of enriching the quality of life for seniors in southern New Jersey. We advocate for, and support, the elderly and their families as they confront the challenges associated with aging.
Here’s a look at our history and how we have evolved to where we are today.
- 1916 – The Hebrew Sheltering Home of Atlantic City opens its doors on Columbia Place.
- 1923 – The founders open a larger Hebrew Old Age Home on Georgia Ave. to meet the growing needs of the elderly.
- 1928 – Construction begins on a new, larger facility that can better meet the community’s needs.
- 1934 – The Hebrew Old Age and Sheltering Home of Atlantic City opens on Vermont Ave. with dormitory style accommodations for 20 residents.

- 1963 – An addition began on the Cosmopolitan, extending the the facility to 150 beds. The addition completed in November of 1963.
- 1970s & 80s – At the same location, the Cosmopolitan Retirement Residence opened The Max and Bessie Rounick Pavilion in 1987 as a 70-bed residence center, offering senior services for independent living.

The home was renamed Seashore Gardens Living Center, becoming licensed as a skilled nursing center with 151 beds.
- 2003 – The Seashore Gardens Foundation was created to provide important funding for the programs and services that enrich elder lives at Seashore Gardens Living Center (SGLC). The Foundation was formed as the charitable arm of the nonprofit Home to help fill the gap in funding at a time when it was increasingly difficult to meet the standard for a high level of care.
